September Mindset Shifts: A Gentle Reset for Your Mind, Body & Soul
September can feel like a turning point.
The summer is beginning to draw to a close, the evenings slowly become darker and there is often a natural shift in our routines.
For many of us, September brings a feeling of starting again.
Children return to school, holidays come to an end, work routines change and suddenly we find ourselves thinking about what we want from the months ahead.
But perhaps this September doesn’t need to be about putting pressure on yourself to change everything.
So, as we move into autumn, here are five mindset shifts I’d love you to consider.
Mindset Shift 1: Clarity Isn’t Found — It’s Built
One of the biggest things that can hold us back is waiting for clarity.
We tell ourselves:
“I just need to know what I want.”
“I need to work out what direction I’m going in.”
“I’ll take action when I’m certain.”
But sometimes clarity doesn’t arrive before the action.
Clarity is built through action.
You don’t necessarily need to know exactly where you’re going. You simply need to be willing to take the next step.
Put one foot in front of the other.
Try something.
Learn something.
Have the conversation.
Make the decision.
Take the opportunity.
And then see what happens.
Every step gives you more information about yourself, your direction and what feels right for you.
You don’t have to have the whole path mapped out before you begin.
Sometimes you discover the path by walking it.
So instead of asking yourself:
“What should I do with my life?”
Try asking:
“What is one meaningful step I can take today?”
Because living a meaningful life isn’t necessarily about having all the answers.
It’s about being willing to participate in your own life.
Mindset Shift 2: You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out
There can be so much pressure to have a plan.
We can look around at other people and believe they know exactly where they’re going, while we’re still trying to work things out.
But life rarely follows a straight line.
We change.
Our circumstances change.
Our priorities change.
And sometimes the thing we thought we wanted isn’t what we want anymore.
That’s okay.
You are allowed to change your mind.
You are allowed to start again.
You are allowed to take a different direction.
You don’t need to know what the next five years look like.
Sometimes you only need to know what the next step looks like.
Give yourself permission to move forward without having everything figured out.
You can trust yourself to make the next decision when you get there.
Mindset Shift 3: The Story You Tell Yourself Matters
One of the most powerful forces in your life may not be your talent, your circumstances or even the opportunities that come your way.
It can be the story you tell yourself about who you are and what is possible for you.
Each of us constructs a story about who we are, where we’ve come from and how we came to be the person we are today.
And that story can have a powerful influence on our psychological wellbeing.
The way we make sense of our experiences can influence how we cope with challenges, how resilient we feel when life becomes difficult and even our capacity for growth and change.
Think about the conversations you have with yourself every day.
What do you say when something goes wrong?
What do you tell yourself when you make a mistake?
What do you believe about yourself when life doesn’t go according to plan?
Do you tell yourself:
“Nothing ever works out for me.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“This always happens to me.”
“There’s nothing I can do.”
Or is your inner voice saying:
“This is difficult, but I’ll work through it.”
“I’ve faced difficult things before.”
“What can I learn from this?”
“What can I do next?”
There is a huge difference.
Your circumstances are real, and sometimes life can be incredibly difficult. We don’t always get to choose what happens to us.
But we can become more conscious of the meaning we give those experiences and the story we continue to tell ourselves afterwards.
So here’s a question worth sitting with:
Are you talking to yourself as though you are the victim of your life — or the hero of your life?
Being the hero doesn’t mean pretending everything is wonderful.
It doesn’t mean ignoring pain, disappointment or difficult circumstances.
It means recognising that your story isn’t necessarily finished because you’ve reached a difficult chapter.
You can turn the page.
You can make a different choice.
You can ask for help.
You can learn.
You can grow.
You can begin again.
Your past may be part of your story, but it doesn’t have to write every chapter that comes next.
The question isn’t whether your story contains difficult chapters.
It probably does.
The question is:
What meaning are you giving those chapters, and what story are you choosing to write from here?
Because the story you tell yourself doesn’t simply describe your life.
It can influence how you experience your life, how you respond when things don’t go to plan and how much space you allow yourself to grow.
You are not just the story of what has happened to you. You are also the person who gets to decide what happens next.
Mindset Shift 4: Don’t Forget to Notice How Far You’ve Come
When we’re focused on where we want to be, it’s very easy to overlook where we already are.
We can become so focused on the next goal, the next achievement or the next thing we need to fix that we forget to acknowledge our own growth.
So this September, take a moment to look backwards.
Who were you this time last year?
What were you dealing with?
What have you learned?
What have you overcome?
What boundaries have you created?
What are you now able to cope with that once felt impossible?
Growth isn’t always obvious.
Sometimes growth looks like responding differently.
Sometimes it looks like walking away.
Sometimes it looks like saying no.
Sometimes it looks like finally choosing yourself.
And sometimes it simply looks like getting through a difficult period and continuing to put one foot in front of the other.
Don’t only celebrate where you’re going. Celebrate how far you’ve already come.
Mindset Shift 5: Pay Attention to Your Energy
We often talk about managing our time.
But how often do we think about managing our energy?
As we move into a new season, it’s worth asking yourself:
What gives me energy?
What drains me?
Who makes me feel like myself?
What situations leave me feeling depleted?
What activities help me feel calm, grounded and connected?
Your energy is valuable.
That doesn’t mean avoiding everything that is challenging. Life will always contain difficult moments.
But it does mean becoming more conscious about where you’re investing your emotional and mental energy.
Sometimes creating more balance isn’t about adding something else to your already busy life.
Sometimes it’s about letting something go.
It might be a habit.
A commitment.
A relationship dynamic.
A belief about yourself.
Or simply the expectation that you have to do everything perfectly.
September can be a wonderful time to reassess what is genuinely supporting you.
A Little September Reflection
Take a few quiet minutes with these questions:
- What is one thing I’ve been waiting for clarity about?
- What small action could I take instead of continuing to wait?
- What story am I currently telling myself about my life?
- Am I speaking to myself like the victim of my circumstances or the hero of my story?
- What would I say to myself if I spoke with the same compassion I would offer someone I love?
- What have I achieved or overcome that I haven’t given myself credit for?
- What is currently giving me energy?
- What is draining my energy?
- What is one meaningful change I could make this month?
You don’t need to answer everything immediately.
Just start with one question.
Sometimes one honest answer can be the beginning of something new.
From Healthy Mind and Soul
At Healthy Mind and Soul, I believe wellbeing isn’t just about looking after one part of ourselves.
Our mind, body and soul are connected, and sometimes creating positive change begins with simply becoming more aware of what’s happening within us.
Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, reconnect with yourself, work on your mindset or simply create more balance in your life, small steps can make a meaningful difference.
This September, don’t put pressure on yourself to have all the answers.
Take the next step.
Be kind to yourself.
Notice the story you’re telling yourself.
Celebrate how far you’ve come.
